FTP is the most used and popular way of transferring and sharing files and folders over the Internet and has several advantages compared to other methods, like email attachments or online sharing websites. But the problem with FTP is that most FTP sites which allow you to upload and download files are usually not free and the ones which are free don't offer enough advantages to suit the average user.

This is why it's a good idea to host your own FTP server, as you will be able to access your files from any Internet location. An application which can help you in this case is FileZilla Server. As the name states, this Windows program turns your computer into an advanced FTP server.

After the application has been installed, the user first needs to set up a password for the FTP server and also add the IP address, in case it hasn't been automatically recognized by the application. After completing this step, it's time to configure users for the FTP server. Configuring a user requires adding his name, password, the folder for which he will have access and the type of access. As such, each user can have a separate access type, for example some of them can be configured to access just files, without deleting or modifying them.

Optionally, FileZilla Server allows creating customized groups and adding users to each of them. Thus, one will be able to better organize a large list of users and also find a specific one, without having to use a search feature. By accessing the options section of the application, the user will be able to customize the program's port, the number of simultaneous connections and so on.
